The Bloomberg Billionaires Index 2025 saw a dramatic change as Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison briefly surpassed Elon Musk to become the world’s richest person.
Ellison’s net worth jumped by $89 billion in a single day, reaching $383.2 billion. This record-breaking gain came after Oracle’s strong quarterly earnings report, which beat analyst expectations and signaled massive growth potential for the company.
For much of the day, Ellison held the top spot, but by the next morning, Musk regained the position with a narrow $1 billion lead.
How Billionaire Rankings Changed
Earlier this year, Ellison climbed from fourth place to second, overtaking Mark Zuckerberg (Meta CEO) and Jeff Bezos (Amazon founder). Now, he is in a close race with Musk for the number one position.
Musk, who first claimed the title of the world’s richest person in 2021, has seen his ranking fluctuate, losing the crown to Jeff Bezos and Bernard Arnault (LVMH) at different times. However, Musk has mostly dominated the index and last year became the first individual to cross the $400 billion net worth mark.
