Bihar is stepping into a new era of sustainable development with a unique initiative — producing Cow Dung Bricks bricks from indigenous cow dung. This project not only promises eco-friendly construction materials but also opens doors for women’s empowerment and rural employment.
Government’s Innovative Step Towards Sustainability
The Department of Animal and Fisheries Resources in Bihar has, for the first time, taken charge of implementing this special scheme. The plan is to train rural women to use cow dung not only for making bricks but also for crafting rakhis, pots, idols, lamps, and incense sticks.
How the Scheme Works
Under the program:
- 120 women aged 18–50 will be selected, with priority given to widows, destitute women, Dalits, and tribal women.
- Training will be provided in two phases — first for production, and second for online marketing.
- Women will be given complete assistance to sell their products in both local and online markets.
Economic & Environmental Benefits
This initiative aims to:
- Boost rural employment by providing steady income opportunities for women.
- Reduce environmental waste by utilizing cow dung in productive ways.
- Offer cost-effective and durable bricks that are water-resistant, fire-resistant, and temperature-regulating.
Expert Insights
Dr. Anjali Kumari, Animal Husbandry Officer, says:
“In rural Bihar, employment opportunities for women are limited. This scheme is designed to make women self-reliant through skill development and entrepreneurship. Cow dung is abundantly available in villages, and the government will ensure market access for these products.”
Success Stories: Farmers Leading the Way
In Pirpainti, farmers Lallan Ramnarayan Sinha and Dayanand Singh have already made bricks and pots from cow dung. According to them:
- These bricks are several times stronger than traditional ones.
- They are eco-friendly and help maintain cooler temperatures inside houses.
- They are cheaper than regular bricks, making them an affordable housing solution.
The Road Ahead
With this initiative, Bihar is not only embracing green technology but also creating a pathway for rural women to become entrepreneurs. The cow dung brick project is a shining example of how sustainability and social empowerment can go hand in hand.
